“How blessed is he who considers the helpless; the Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble. The Lord will protect him and keep him alive, and he shall be called blessed upon the earth; and do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.  The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed; in his illness, You restore him to health.” (Psalm 41:1-3)

To look beyond yourself is to look at life.  We are not our own, nor were we created as an isolated being.  We are community and in community love is created and sustained.  The blessing of one who looks beyond themselves is to taste true life and liberty.  Come into the presence of the Lord and see life and live it as He has created it to be lived.  Love your neighbor and consider the plight of the helpless.

Lord, my sinfulness drives me inward and I do not see the plight of the helpless.  Help me to move beyond myself and know that in community I find love, for love only of self is death.  You love because You are community and You teach us to love, for You created us to be community.  Guide me, O Lord, to live out the love You give by caring for others as You have cared for me.

While yet I was helpless and at the right time, You provided the means of salvation, that I would not linger in this life of death, but be lifted up through grace into life.  Guide me, Lord Jesus, in the salvation You have purchased from the cross that I might be lifted up to go out and serve others in Your example.  May I serve the helpless as You direct, O Lord, and be whom You have made me to be.  Amen.
