“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:7)
My theology professor tossed out the comment like a clown throwing candy: “When it comes to pastors, God is Eli Whitney: He makes interchangeable parts.” My class (none of whom were yet studying for the ministry) stared at him blankly. He grinned. “You know: if one breaks, you just get another.”
On the one hand, his statement sounds all wrong. It squashes our humanity and sense of compassion. Yet on the other hand, it liberates! Behind it stands this conviction: God Himself works in the pastors of the Church. Their labor is His, and therefore, the Church will never fall.
It stands on God’s Word alone, the imperishable seed by which you are born anew (1 Peter 1:23). One pastor may plant that Word in your ears, and another may nourish it, but behind it all stands the Holy Spirit Himself, contending for you and laboring to bring you to the day of harvest. What honor His brings to this earth of His, to work through people for people and thus confirm His great love for the human race.
LET US PRAY: Come, Holy Spirit, and bestir Yourself in the ministers of Your Church, increasing their zeal, wisdom, and strength for the sake of the Gospel. Through their labor, cast Your Word far and wide, and so raise up a harvest of thanksgiving and praise to our heavenly Father; through Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord. Amen
