“For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire, and the greedy man curses and spurns the Lord.  The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him.  All his thoughts are, “There is no God.”  (Psalm 10:3-4)

So many in our world spurn God and do not look to Him.  They become hostile at the mention of Him and rail against any thought of the Lord.  Greed, avarice and envy rule their hearts.  It has ever been this way in the rebellion of man.  Do not be as they, but seek the Lord while He may be found; for only in the One who created life will we find life’s purpose and meaning.

Lord, I see all around me those who ignore You.  If I mention Your name, or even the idea of You, many become hostile and revile the thought that You are there.  Yes Lord, it is offensive to You, but help me see in this simply an affirmation of what Your Word already says.  Guide me to seek You and turn to You in all things knowing that You are God and there is no other.

Lord God in the flesh, You have come amongst those who would turn to You and see that You are the God of the ages.  Guide me in the truth You have revealed that I would hold fast to truth and live according to Your never-changing principles which You established in the beginning.  Help me keep to the course and hold fast to all that You teach me that I may walk with You now and always in spite of the scoffers around me.  Amen.

Friday, December 30, 2016 Devotion

Why do You stand afar off, O Lord? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?  In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; let them be caught in the plots which they have devised.”  (Psalm 10:1-2)

It seems at times as though the Lord is silent.  He looks and sees, but the cry goes up and it seems as though He is not there.  Yet the Lord is always aware, listening and knows.  Who are we to question the Lord’s providence?  Does not an earthly father sometimes remain silent?  Know then the Lord is God and He will accomplish what He has purposed.  Everything is in His hands.

Lord, guide me through the times where I am desperate, knowing that You have never lost control.  Lead me beyond my urgency to see that in You I can always rest even though the world be in a tumult.  Lead me beyond the wicked who pursue to be pursued by You and find Your peace which surpasses all understanding.  According to Your loving kindness grant wisdom and understanding.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for remaining calm amidst the storm.  Guide me to become like You that in any storm I would remain calm and trust in Your never-failing peace.  Lead me to see that in walking with You, You will calmly guide me to live according to the Father’s will.  May I be faithful in following You my Lord and Master and heed all that You instruct me to do. Amen.

“Arise, O Lord, do not let man prevail; let the nations be judged before You.  Put them in fear, O Lord; let the nations know that they are but men.”  (Psalm 9:19-20)

In times of change, perhaps even travail, the people look to the Lord and ask how long He will allow man to contend with Him.  Since the fall, men have been contending with the Lord, but God is still God.  Do not be one who contends with the Lord, but look to Him in good times and bad and know that He is Sovereign of all at all times.  Know that the Lord is God.

Lord, help me to move beyond my own circumstances knowing that You are Lord of all.  Guide me to look to You always and know that in You is the hope of all generations.  You have called those who will listen and follow You.  Guide us through Your Word to know that in You is the hope of every generation and in every circumstance.  Lead us according to Your will and Word.

Lord Jesus, You are the final answer to those who rebel and the hope of all who follow You.  Guide me in accordance with the Father’s will to not be judged as the nations, but according to Your grace.  Lead me in the way You would have me go this day and bring me to the place that, regardless of the circumstances in my life, I look to You.  Help me O Lord to follow You always.  Amen.

“The wicked will return to Sheol, even all the nations who forget God.  For the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted perish forever.”  (Psalm 9:17-18)

The nations rise and fall.  The nations go to the grave.  Those who seek the Lord and His providence see that He is always there and ready to lift up those who turn to Him.  He provides for us all in every season and will guide those who trust Him into a life that is righteous.  The hope of every person is the Lord who created us all.  Trust in the One who created life and sustains it.

Lord, it is said time and again that our hope is anything but You.  But You alone are the hope of every people.  Lead us to see the truth of the salvation You have given by coming and bearing the sins of all who confess them in order to free us from the insanity of this rebellious world.  Cause us to see how time and again You provide for the needy and sustain the weary to live according to Your will.

Lord Jesus, as You fought against the prince of darkness and the forces of this age, You provided for those who were in need.  Guide me in the simplicity of the life You demonstrated through knowing that only in You is there hope.  Lead me to do those things You give me to do knowing that You will grow in me wisdom and understanding.  May I be Your servant this day doing the Father’s will.  Amen.

“The nations have sunk down in the pit which they have made; in the net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.  The Lord has made Himself known; He has executed judgment.  In the work of his own hands the wicked is snared.”  (Psalm 9:15-16)

In the scramble of speech, the nations will say they are this or that, but create their own snare of sinful behavior which becomes the trap of their own demise.  Nations come and go, but the Word of the Lord is forever.  See that only the Lord, who created the order of things, knows goodness and offers it to all who will come to Him.  His Word is a salve for all the snares of the wicked one.

Lord guide me to wisdom that I may see the repeating pattern of wickedness as nation after nation arises and the people are led into the traps of those who desire power, wealth and lift up greed as goodness.  Lead me to Your gentle ways that I would hold fast to Your never-failing truth of life, order and the way of things.  Lead me to live a life that is in harmony with You.

Lord Jesus, You have come to lead as many as would follow You out of the cacophony of repeating wickedness for the true life that knows You are the One who has come to lead those who will follow into eternity with You.  Guide me this day in Your wisdom and by Your grace to live according to the Father’s will, seeking to do what is pleasing in Your sight.  Amen.

“Be gracious to me, O Lord; see my affliction from those who hate me, You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may tell of all Your praises, that in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in Your salvation.”  (Psalm 9:13-14)

Blessed are you when people persecute you because of the name of the Lord.  You are blessed because, in the midst of this rebellious world, the Lord has lifted you up in His promise.  Tell others of the salvation You have received from the Lord and rejoice not in the sufferings (except where it reminds you of what the Lord endured for you) but in the salvation He has given you by grace.

Lord You are to be praised above all names.  You are the One who has created all things and they are in Your hands.  Guide me to live, whatever the cost, a life that praises You.  You alone O Lord are worthy of all honor and praise.  Lead me into a life that tells of Your greatness and lives knowing that by grace You have included me in Zion.  Thank You, Lord, for Your salvation.

Lord Jesus, You endured the ridicule of those around You and the continued ridicule through the generations of those who hate You, but You endured for the sake of those who would come with You into eternity.  Guide me this day to speak of Your love to all whom I meet as an act of praise of all that You have done.  Thank You for the privilege of following You in life and liberty from this world of rebellion.   Amen.

Sunday, December 25, 2016 Devotion

“Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion; declare among the peoples His deeds.  For He who requires blood remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.”  (Psalm 9:11-12)

Remember that the One who requires blood spilled His own blood for the sake of those who dwell in Zion.  He knows the number of hairs on each person’s head.  He has not forgotten those who are afflicted, nor forsaken those in need.  The Lord is a help in every time of need.  Turn to the Lord and be comforted in the hope He has given for this and every age through His salvation.

Lord, You are the One who has brought everything in existence.  Guide me according to Your never failing Word to see in You that no matter what may happen in this wicked world, You are the One who will sustain the weary and lead all who are in You to the safety of Your eternal rest.  Lead me in Your way of truth O Lord and cause me to not veer from the path upon which You have set me.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have walked the trail I walk and enabled me to see the troubles of this world for what they are.  Through the Holy Spirit, lead me this day to see in You the hope and encouragement I need for all that may come my way.  Your Word is forever and Your promises are there to sustain me as I journey through the day.  May I spend my day singing praises to You O Lord.  Amen.

“The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble; and those who know Your name will put their trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”  (Psalm 9:9-10)

There are some who have the notion that those who follow the Lord will not experience times of difficulty or distress.  This age is filled with difficulty and distress.  The Lord is a refuge for all who come to Him.  “Come, you who are weary,” our Savior said.  The Lord does not forsake those who trust Him.  He is with us through our trials and travails.  Trust in the Lord above all things.

Lord, help me to not get caught up in the wicked thinking that You have abandoned us during times of difficulty.  Your are the stronghold of all those who trust in You.  Guide me according to Your never failing principles to see in You the hope of every generation.  Let me never forget that You have not, nor ever will, forsake those who seek You.  Guide me in Your presence O Lord.

Lord Jesus, You are well acquainted with grief.  You suffered for the sake of all who will come through You to everlasting life.  Help me lean into Your arms of mercy knowing that in You alone is the hope of the ages.  Guide me according to Your never-failing grace to see in You the hope You have given and to walk through every travail that may come knowing that the Father has purpose in everything.  Amen.

Friday, December 23, 2016 Devotion

“But the Lord abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment, and He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.”  (Psalm 9:7-8)

The Lord is everlasting and knows all people.  No one escapes His judgement, but those who come to Him through Christ see that their judgement has already been poured out on the cross.  Come then through Christ and see that in His goodness the Lord has redeemed as many as would come through Christ to Him.  In the Lord there is true justice and equity for all people.

The day will come when all people stand before You.  You are the hope of the nations and all  people.  Your throne has been established from the beginning and You are the Sovereign of all people.  Lead me to see the truth that You alone are God and that the nations will rise and fall; but that You are forever.  In that truth, guide me to trust You above all things, people and nations.

Lord, You are just and we, the sinners of this world, cannot fully understand all that You are or what You have done.  Help me above all things to trust You knowing that in You alone is true justice to be found.  Guide the thoughts of my mind and the desires of my heart to be in accord with Your perfect will.  Bring me into a right relationship with You and with others through Christ my Savior.  Amen.

Thursday, December 22, 2016 Devotion

“You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and ever.  The enemy has come to an end in perpetual ruins, and You have uprooted the cities; the very memory of them has perished.”  (Psalm 9:5-6)

Step back in history and see how nations rise and fall.  Those who go against the ways of the Lord, who do not uphold what is right, see the nations fall.   Time and again it is the same story.  The Lord upholds those who do good and brings to nothing those who do evil.  Trust in the One who holds history in His hands and will lead you where you need to go.  The Lord is good and upholds those who do good.

Regardless of what happens around me, help me to do what You would have me do in all parts of my life.  Lead me O Lord to see in You hope not only for the future, but today and every day.  Guide me in the ways You have established and lead me according to Your lovingkindness to live the life You have given me here and now.  Help me make the choices that are pleasing in Your sight.

Thank You Lord for opening my eyes to see Your goodness.  Through the salvation You have prepared in the sight of all people, guide me according to Your ways.  Lead me to live choosing those things which are right and fitting as a follower of Christ.  Work on my heart to have the attitude and bearing in this world that demonstrates Your goodness to all whom I meet.  Amen.
