“I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing to write them to you with pen and ink;”  (3 John 13)

There are some things that are better said face to face.  Words can be twisted as we have seen in this passage of Scripture, but matters of the heart are conveyed in relationship.  How can one hear the truth unless one hears a preacher bring the truth in person.  There is a reason the church has grown the way it has.  With this passage, heed the warning and listen carefully to make sure the whole Gospel is being given and not the filtered word of one who is not giving the whole Gospel.

Lord, grant that I would have a discerning ear to hear the truth and follow You.  Guide me through Your Word to know when the Word is being spoken.  Lead me O Lord to listen to Your Word alone and see in You the truth alone.  Lord, You are the One who leads and You have a reason for all things.  Lead me Lord to hear what You would have me hear and leave behind all other things.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for leading me in the way of truth.  Guide me now and always to hold fast to the truth You have spoken first to the disciples and now to me.  May I be one who listens carefully and holds fast to Your Word of truth.  Lead me now and always that I may speak what is good and do what You direct me to do.  In all things, may I become a person who loves as You love.  Amen.

“Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true.”  (3 John 12)

No matter what is received, it does not matter that what will come back may not necessarily be the truth.  The sinner can and often does filter what is true.  Seek truth.  Speak truth.  Do not allow for the modification of the truth, for that is a lie and how the devil deceived Eve.  That is the testimony that has been given over and over again.  Cling to what has been given from the beginning.

Lord, I am guilty of filtering what you have said and making it fit into my idea of how things ought to be.  Guide me, I pray, away from self-thought and into the truth that You have spoken, for Your Word is true.  Give me the good testimony and then help me speak that good testimony that others may know the truth and be set free.  Lead me to give up my heart to You that I would no longer filter what You say, but let Your Word filter me.

Lord Jesus, You have given the Word of eternal life.  Help me to live into the Word You have given.  Help me see and know when something is false and then help me to flee from it.  Guide me in Your way O Lord that I would stay in the truth of Your Word.  When I speak, guide me to be careful and diligent that I would not be guilty of leading any astray.  Hold me fast to You O Lord.  Amen.

“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.”  (3 John 11)

When you run into someone who accuses, know that the devil is the accuser.  When you see someone that controls, you know this is not from God, for God does not control, but in this age allows people’s will to do as they will.  See the contrast and know that the devil sends in those who will harm the cause of Christ, but also know that our Lord is fully aware and has a purpose in everything.

Lord, help me flee from those things which are as the devil would do them.  Keep me far from trying to do things, if even with what I think are good intentions, that would harm the cause of the Gospel.  Guide me according to Your never-changing principles to hold fast to the truth You have revealed once for all that I may be Your faithful servant now and forever.

Lord Jesus, in You alone is there hope and a glorious future.  Keep me close to You that I would listen to all that You have to say and do those things which are pleasing in Your sight.  Guide my thoughts and actions that the pride of the devil would not enter in, but that I would humbly submit to the will of the Father.  Lead me today O Lord to do what is right and righteous, pleasing You and others in the Gospel.  Amen.

“For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church.”  (3 John 10)

There are those who love to control and believe themselves to be gatekeepers for the Lord.  They are not working for the Lord.  Be wary of those who are so controlling.  They have always been in the church.  They accuse.  They will not welcome others of the faith and they drive people away.  Listen to the Lord and stand firm, even against those whom you know that do not do as the Lord would have us do.

Lord, I become comfortable and do not want to confront those who stand right beside me and hurt Your church.  Help me, I pray, to be willing to be like John and speak against those who would harm Your bride, the church.  Help me to not be controlling, or insistent, but to be sensitive and compassionate, but firm in upholding what is right and true for the cause of the Gospel.

Lord Jesus, You have come to redeem all who would learn to obey all that You have commanded.  Help me never to forget that this is Your church and that You are its head.  Help me stand firm against those who would see the church as their own and live by their own rules.  Guide me today to be faithful to You in all things, but firm in commitment to Your Word of truth.  Amen.

“I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.”  (3 John 9)

Be wary of those who believe themselves to be exclusive in knowing what is true.  Teachers rise who draw people unto themselves, but we are to be drawn into the Lord.  Those who will not heed wisdom ought not be listened to.  The ones who want to be first shall be last.  Do not seek position or status, but the upward call of listening to the Lord, following where He would have you go.

Lord, there are those in this world to whom we ought not listen.  There is also the temptation to think more highly of ourselves than we ought.  Help me, I pray, to be discerning and learn and listen as You teach me by Your Holy Spirit.  Guide me through all the pitfalls of this age to hold fast to what is right and true and to not be a contrarian when You send messages through others.  Hold me fast to the truth of Your Word.

Lord Jesus, You have taught us that we are not to seek after status or position as those in the world do.  You have taught us to not seek to be first, or exclusive, but to lift one another up in love.  Help me follow Your Word of truth and not to give into the temptations that come along that I may truly follow You in thought, word and deed.  Guide me this day I pray Lord Jesus.  Amen.

“Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers with the truth.”  (3 John 8)

Become the person of integrity and work with people of integrity.  Those who abide in Christ and have Christ in them hold fast to the truth who is Christ and stand firm in the truth.  Learn to live with, in and through what the Lord gives and support others around you who do the same.  The Lord is building His kingdom one person at a time and they are to be the communion of saints.

Lord, in this world of continuous associations, help me to be drawn to others who are in You that together we may support one another in Your cause of truth.  Guide me through this life to see that only the truth remains and be committed to being a person who holds fast to truth and encourages others who are doing the same.  Lead me along the narrow road which is straight and true.

Lord Jesus, You have come to reveal truth to all who will believe.  You have sparked my heart to seek after You.  Guide me in the way which is true and help me to see clearly those around me who are also holding fast to the truth.  Lead me in the way You would have me go that I may forever hold fast to the truth You have revealed and learn and grow and support those around me who do the same.  Amen.

“For they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.”  (3 John 7)

The Name of the Lord, God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is given so that  in the name of Jesus all who believe would not perish but have everlasting life.  Whatever we do, do as the Lord has done for you and give as the Lord has given.  Too many do for what they can get, but in Christ we are to do for others for their sakes.  It is an admirable example to show your love by giving freely.

Lord, so motivate my heart to move beyond this world’s ways of giving to get.  Help me to see that I find life when I give it away and that I find You when I do what You would have me do.  Take me to the place where I too would give without receiving recompense knowing that I am giving because I was first given to by You.  Change my heart O Lord to be one that lives for You.

Lord Jesus, there is no other name under heaven by which men can be saved.  Help me to live in, through and by Your name sharing with others today what You have shared with me that they too might taste of true life.  Lead me O Lord to go into the world sharing Your goodness through all I say and do that whatever comes may be to the Father’s glory.  May Your name be praised above all other names through me.  Amen.

“and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. ”  (3 John 6)

Are there others who testify of your love for the Lord and His church?  Yes, we do have reputations and they can reflect our work in the Lord.  Some are trouble makers, busybodies and gossips and some are workers in the Lord’s vineyards.  Who are you?  Would John commend you for the work you are doing in the Lord’s kingdom?  Live to show yourselves approved.

Lord, I do get caught up in the ways of this world and think that I can skate by, but You who know all things know otherwise.  Help me to learn to live in such a way that others will know I am Your disciple through the love I demonstrate out in the world.  Guide me in Your way of living and loving, Lord, that I would practice what I say I believe throughout the day.

Lord Jesus, You are the example of living out love in the world.  I do not need to be all things to all people, but need to learn how to submit to Your will and do what You would have me do.  Help me this day to be faithful to the calling You have given me knowing that only in You is there truth, hope and a future.  Lead me through Your Holy Spirit this day to do what is pleasing in the Father’s sight.  Amen.

“Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brethren, and especially when they are strangers;”  (3 John 5)

Reaching out to others and caring for one another is at the heart of what the Lord teaches as the right order of things.  Love your neighbor as yourself.  It is not about focusing on our personal behavior, but upon doing what there is to be done.  Living life as it comes along, caring for what is in front of us and doing good.  These are the core elements of the behavior of the godly.

Lord, I focus upon the being good rather than upon simply doing good.  Move me outside of myself that I would focus upon the right thing to do rather than always worrying about myself.  Lead me to have a heart like Christ’s that I would simply live the life You have given me knowing that You are accomplishing Your purpose each and every day through all that You have made.

Thank You Lord for calling me into a new life that sees the reality of all that You have created.  Guide me this day to do what You give me to do knowing that only in You is there truth and life.  Lead me O Lord to do the good You would have me do and trust in Your never failing support to become the person You are calling me to be.  Lead me today, O Lord, in Your ways.  Amen.
