“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”  (1 John 4:7)

Our Savior summed up the commandments with the admonition to love the Lord and one another.  God is love and in that we have love for one another, we show the truth of God’s presence through our lives.  Love is not a feeling, but the doing of what is right in the sight of our Lord.  Those who are in the Lord know right, for the Lord Himself is there to guide us into all truth.

My problem Lord is that I do not listen to You.  You speak, but I do not like what You say.  Help me, I pray, to move beyond myself, give up and lay down my life at the cross that I may live for You and the Holy cause You have given me through the Gospel.  Lead me to live, speak and act in true love, being a reflection of Your love in the world knowing that You are working all things together according to the Father’s purpose.

Lord Jesus, I need You to lead me today and everyday in Your way of truth.  I must decrease and You must increase.  Help me, I pray to see in You and through You every action I should take.  Keep my mind clear that I may hold fast to the truth You have spoken and no matter what happens around me, cling to You above all things.  Lead me, my Savior, to be Your disciple who does the Father’s will.  Amen.

“We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”  (1 John 4:6)

The Holy Spirit opens the hearts and minds of those who are in Christ.  No matter who speaks it, the truth sounds the same.  Those who are in the Lord rejoice at the voice of the Master.  Those who are not cannot hear the voice of the Master.  We are encouraged to listen to the Lord’s voice through one another and so, in fellowship, we know the Lord will speak and we should rejoice.

Lord, You work as You do and by Your own doing.  Help me not to refute the voice You speak, but listen as You speak knowing that You will choose when, where and how You will do all things.  Guide me to be attentive and to listen, knowing that at all times You are there to lead Your people in the way of truth.  Through all things, lead me to know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Lord Jesus, apart from You I can do nothing.  Help me hear Your voice when You speak and do what is right in Your sight.  Guide me along the way of truth, both speaking and listening that together with those whom You have chosen I might be a part of what You are doing through the Gospel.  Lead me today and every day to speak and listen, to hear and respond and in all things, bring glory to the Father.  Amen.

“They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them.”  (1 John 4:5)

There is a difference between the things of the world and the things of the Lord.  The world cannot know the mysteries of Christ.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you have been given the insight to see the way of the Lord.  Pursue what He has given and know the Lord as He knows You.  When you speak to those in the world, speak as they do, but do not be caught up again in sin which leads to death.

Lord, in this world where I both have Your Spirit and the way of the world in me, guide me to see clearly the difference between the two.  You have left me as an intermediary to this fallen world, so keep me from the way of the world which I understand all too well, and lead me ever deeper into the mystery of the faith You have given me.  Through all things, may I bring glory to the Father.

Lord Jesus, without You it is hopeless, but with You, there is nothing but hope.  Guide me in the way of truth that I may reside in this world of sin, yet remain true to the way of the Gospel.  As things become more difficult, remind me of the saints of old who held fast to the truth of Your Word.  Through all things, prepare me as a child of the Heavenly Father to be faithful and true to the grace You give for all to be saved.  Amen.

“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”  (1 John 4:4)

Greater is He in You than the one in the world.  Hold on to this, for there is no greater truth that the Lord in You.  From the beginning, the Lord has desired that you be in Him and He in you.  Once this reconnecting is done through grace, walk in Him and know that no matter what comes, He knows the plans He has for you and all eternity lays before you.  Do not cling to this world, but to the One who made everything.

Lord, grant that in my flesh, clinging as it does to this fleeting world, there is nothing that will last.  Help me see that clinging to You, the Maker of all things, there is hope and an eternal future.  Though this world linger and the body fade, yet You are forever.  You have given me the gift of grace and enabled me to be Your child.  Lead me in that direction that I would abide in You as You abide in me.

Thank You Lord Jesus for coming to free the sons and daughters of the Father from the clutches of sin and death.  Guide me this day to see in You the only hope for this age.  Lead me to learn what it means to be a child of the Heavenly Father that I may truly abide in You through all things.  Keep me from the way of the flesh and lead me ever deeper in the mystery of the faith You have given me.  Amen.

“And every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.”  (1 John 4:3)

To confess Jesus isn’t just to speak His name, but to live following Him in all His ways.  Believe and confess that Jesus is God in the flesh, come to lead the way for all who will go with Him through life and into eternity.  Any other way is the broad way of destruction for Jesus said that He alone is the way, truth and life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him.

Lord, the devil is filled with so many ways to go, all of which exclude You, or pervert the way You have established.  Help me to simply come as I am and see that in You alone is there hope and a future.  You have come to lead the way for as many as would follow You and in You alone is the way of life.  Help me lean on You and move away from my own understanding that I would learn from Your faithfulness.

Thank You Lord Jesus that You have come to show as many as would follow You the way of everlasting life.  Guide me to see that following You is life and not just a way of life.  Lead me to believe and confess the truth of who You are and what You are doing to a world that, without you, will perish.  Lead me O Lord to see and hear and then obey all that You have commanded.  Amen.

“By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;”  (1 John 4:2)

No fuss, no excuses, the one who simply declares with their life that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh and lives among us.  There are other gospels that dance around who the Lord is, but do not declare the truth of the Triune God.  The Lord has given us what we need to know to stay true, so pay attention and stay true to the One true God in Trinity and Trinity in unity, just as the creeds also teach.

Lord, the devil is prowling on whom He may devour and his minions are all around.  Help me to simply and clearly see that in You alone, the One Savior, Jesus Christ, who has come in the flesh is there hope and life.  Lead me, O Savior to trust in You and know that in You I will and have found the source of life, liberty and peace.  Help me to now and always reside in You alone.

Lord Jesus, this world is filled with those who say all kinds of things, but do not look to You who is the author and finisher of our faith.  Guide me ever more deeply in the way of Your Gospel that I may learn to become like You.  Help me with the obstacles that are all around and to discern the false spirits that would malign and lead astray my walk with You.  In all things, please keep me faithful.  Amen.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  (1 John 4:1)

There are many spirits out there.  One will say this way and another that way.  Test the spirits according to the Word and hold fast to the sole voice of the Holy Spirit which will lead you in holiness and righteousness.  Be content with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and do not veer from the path set before You.  The Holy Spirit will teach you to test the spirits and know what is right.

In every age, there are those, led by another spirit, who will go in varying directions, yet the truth of those who have been obedient is apparent.  Help me to be diligent to hold fast to the truth You have revealed that I may walk with You alone in the goodness You have demonstrated my Savior.  Hold me fast to Your Word of truth and guide me in the ways You would have me go.

Lord Jesus, apart from You there is utter confusion.  In You, there is hope and a future.  Guide me in the way of truth that You have established that I may walk with You this day and every day in the righteousness You alone can give.  Help me to be faithful in the call You have given me, that I may learn how to be a child of the Heavenly Father.  By Your grace, lead me every step of the way.  Amen.

“This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.”  (1 John 3:23)

Believe and love, these are the two things that one who lives by faith does.  Know that in the name of Jesus all will come to pass as He has promised and that we are to learn how to love one another.  Believe and love are verbs, words of action.  Therefore, be a person of action and do the things you know are right as one who believes in the Lord Jesus, loving others and Him.

Lord, in many ways it is very simple.  You want us to look to You for all things, get along with one another and behave, yet we live in a world that does the opposite.  Take me from thinking of myself first and lead me to the place where I think of others and You.  Move my heart to do what is right whether or not I feel like it.  As You have loved, teach me how to love that I may show my belief in all I do.

Thank You Lord Jesus for being the example of love.  You have asked that I believe all that You have spoken.  Help my unbelief that I would move beyond myself and realize that You, God in the flesh, are more than able to do all that You have said.  Help me to forever trust in Your provision and lean on the Holy Spirit that I may indeed love as You love and do all that You command.  Amen.

“The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”  (1 John 3:24)

The Lord has said that He will write the law in our hearts and that we will know what is right.  Listen to the Holy Spirit as the law which is in You makes plain what needs to be done.  Live according to the will of the Lord and not according to the winds of this age.  The foolishness of this age will pass away, but the will of the Lord is forever.  Abide in Him and listen to the Spirit speaking to you.

It is more difficult for the flesh which clings to sin than to obey You, my Lord.  I need Your help each and every hour to do what is right.  Cleanse the thoughts of my mind and the actions of my hands that I would learn how to obey and be a child of the Father.  Lead me O Lord to always do what is right knowing that in You alone is there hope and a future.  Guide me in Your way that I may abide in You.

Lord Jesus, You are the example of the godly life.  Help me I pray, to see that in You alone is there hope and a future.  No matter the cost, help me learn obedience, even if I am the only one who obeys, that I may do what is pleasing to You.  Through the Holy Spirit, soften the resistance and replace my heart with Your heart that I may desire what You desire and live according to Your example.  Amen.
