“Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”  (Romans 10:4)

The law shows the genuine boundaries of creation and the lines that God has established from the beginning.  Knowing that all have fallen short of the law’s demands, Christ accomplishes what no other human has been able to accomplish.  Therefore, all who believe on Christ are offered through Him the righteousness is given with the believer united in Him both in death, but also through His resurrection into life eternal.

Lord, the mystery is great, yet the reality is simple.  I f I rely upon myself, I will fall short, but if I trust in You, You give me what I could never obtain on my own.  Help me trust in You alone knowing that in You alone is the hope of the ages fulfilled.  Through Your grace, guide me to trust and believe that You have already accomplished what is needed to be forever united with You and the Father through the Holy Spirit.

Thank You Jesus for gaining for me what I could never gain for myself through Your grace.  Guide me in the grace You give in order to live according to the Father’s will.  In all that I do this day, may I be guided to live in the freedom which is already mine through Your grace and graciously offer to others what You have first given me.  May I be a witness this day of what You have accomplished while on earth.  Amen.

“Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.”  (Romans 10:3)

Unwilling to submit to God’s authority, there are those who create a righteousness that is no righteousness at all that is in their own image.  God has revealed the truth in Christ and believing on Christ is to submit to His authority.  Either God is God, or else the rebellion continues.  We are to submit to the ultimate authority of the Lord God Almighty, King of kings and Lord of lords.

Lord, I want to argue and defy the truth which You have already revealed.  Help me, I pray, to learn to submit to You, for You are gentle and humble and will lead me in the way of true righteousness.  In the power of Your Holy Spirit, lead me to understand the true order of things and live in reality, the reality You have revealed through Your Word.

Thank You, Lord, for revealing truth, for You are truth Incarnate.  Help me learn from You as You guide me through the trouble of this world this day.    Many live in a false righteousness that they establish and with which many others are tempted to follow, but only in You is true righteousness found.  Lead me in Your righteousness today and every day that I may live in the truth of the ages which You have come to reveal.  Amen.

“For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.”  (Romans 10:2)

Zeal for God is not the same as faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  We can become caught up in what we think rather than what the Lord has revealed through His Word.  It begins with being still and knowing that the Lord is Lord.  It comes to understanding by the revelation of the Holy Spirit who guide all who come by faith into truth.  It is finished in the truth that all knowledge comes from the Lord.

Lord, I do get caught up in ways of thinking and depend upon what I know rather than on what You have revealed.  Guide me into right thinking that I may not lean on my own understanding, but upon You, the author and finisher of my faith.  Help me understand that You are the One who must guide me through life and into life eternal and that apart from You, it would be only meaningless speculation.

Thank You, Lord, for freeing all who come through You to the Father by bringing us to faith.  Through faith, guide me into trusting You in all things and not leaning upon my feeble attempts to explain the mystery of the ages.  May I be useful to Your kingdom this day, doing what You appoint me to do and living according to Your Word, being an obedient disciple, living in Your grace.  Amen.

“Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.”  (Romans 10:1)

The prayer for all who believe is that those who are caught up in systems, good though they may be by sinful human standards, would be freed to see the simple truth that salvation is made possible through Christ.  Whether Jew or Gentile, without Christ there is no hope, but in Christ is eternal freedom through the grace He has purchased from the cross.  Live in the faith and hope that Christ gives.

Lord, grant a heart that cares for all who around me regardless of the system into which they are caught up.  Help me realize that apart from Your grace I too could be as they and not understand the unmerited favor You grant by grace to those who believe.  May I be guided by Your compassion with humility that I would simply share the truth You have revealed to all who believe.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for calling me through Your grace to believe the truth that You have paved the way along the narrow road for all who believe.  Guide me today to be humble and gentle, yet resolute in sharing the truth that salvation is found in You.  May I be Your instrument in the world, sharing the Gospel in all I do this day that others may come to know the salvation You offer.  Amen.

Monday, February 24, 2015 Devotion

Just as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”  (Romans 9:33)

The Gospel is simple.  Believe (and by this, it become who you are and what You do) and you will be saved.  Most religious systems are fraught with hoops and obstacles to obtain the goal, but the faith is built on a real relationship through Christ with the Lord God Almighty.  This is offensive to those who think there must be more.  This is a stumbling block to those who say you must do this or that.

Lord, help me understand that You have given me faith to live, not as a beginning place to get somewhere.  In You, I am in You and that is the goal of faith.  Help me live each day, knowing that You have given me life to live.  Help me live according to Your purpose knowing that this is the reason for which I have been given life.  Help me be a disciple who lives in You knowing You are living in me.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for shattering all the barriers of life through faith.  Guide me into the life You have given me knowing that in You I will find all the purpose and meaning of what life is supposed to be.  Guide me into this life You have given me that I may be fully in You, knowing that You are fully in me, working together for good for the Father’s purpose.  May I be faithful today in the calling You have given me.  Amen.

“Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone” (Romans 9:32)

When we get caught up in our works we do not see the hand of the Lord and what He has done and is doing.  When we rest in the Lord and live by His direction, we are in harmony with His will.  It is not by might, nor by works, but by the very hand of God that we are able to do anything at all.  Rest therefore in the grace He gives, for it is sufficient and trust in His provision.

Lord, I become confused by the many opinions that are offered in Your name.  Help me to see clearly what You have said and then put into action those things You would have me do.  Help me slow down, listen and become wise according to Your will.  In all the thinking I do, guide my thoughts to meditate upon Your Word and trust in the revelation You have given me by grace.

Lord, if it is not easy, then it can’t be from You.  You said You burden was easy and Your load light.  Help me to trust in Your Word and not the words of others that I may live freely in this grace You have given.  Guide me into thinking according to Your Word, listening as You guide me through this and every day to accomplish Your will here on earth as it shall be accomplished in heaven.  Amen.

“But Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.”  (Romans 9:31)

Those who think they can come to the place of righteousness through their works are like the Jews who were unable to do it.  In fact, Abraham, the father of the Jews obtained righteousness by faith.  Works do matter, but only as the flow out of faith.  One can not obtain what God alone gives.  One must receive the gift in order to obtain what the gift offers.

Lord, help me not to get caught up in the incessant game that happens when you live by the law apart from faith.  Instead, help me to live by faith knowing that You will add what is needed through faith to accomplish Your will in me.  Guide me clearly through Your Word that I would understand more faithfully the principles You have given knowing that in You alone will I find truth.

Thank You for guiding me through Your Word Lord to understand that what I need is given by You and that what I do is a response to what You have given me.  Help me today to be motivated by faith to live the life You have given me to live, doing that which is right in Your eyes knowing that all I do will work to Your glory because You are the One who is accomplishing all things.  Amen.

“What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith” (Romans 9:30)

We obtain righteousness through faith apart from works of the law.  The law is good, but it does not save us.  What is given is a gift through grace which is offered freely to all, but obtained by those who actually believe.  We therefore are to live by faith, knowing that in faith works will emanate out of the faith we have been given.  What is attained is given, what is done is the response.

Lord, too many teach that we must do this or that when what You say is to believe.  Help me to listen to You knowing that You have the Words of eternal life, for You are the author of life.  Guide me into a way of thinking that is in harmony with Your Word that I may truly obtain by faith that which You have for me.  Guide me daily to grow in this faith You have given knowing that in You alone is there hope.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for obtaining for all who believe that which would be impossible apart from You.  Help me today to live in the faith You have given me and then do what it is that You ask.  In all I do, remind me that it is You who have purchased for me by grace the salvation You have given through forgiveness, lest I should have any reason to boast except in the grace You freely give to all who believe.  Amen.

“For the Lord will execute His word on the earth, thoroughly and quickly.”  And just as Isaiah foretold, “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.” (Romans 9:28, 29)

In many respects, our world has become like Sodom and Gomorrah.  The world rejects the order of God in favor of the lies of the devil.  We are to be thankful that by grace, we have been called out of the devilishness of this world to live according to the Lord’s purpose.  He has called each one of us to be the ones who share His posterity available through salvation to all who might believe and be saved.

Lord, help me not to get caught up in the incessant arguments of those who are doing nothing more than promoting Sodom and Gomorrah.  Instead, grant that I be a person of grace who simply speaks the truth and lives according to Your purpose.  Guide me with wisdom to speak the words that may be effective in every situation, upholding the timeless truth of Your perfect order.

Thank You for being with me in this crazy world O Lord.  Help me rest in You in every circumstance knowing that in You alone is there hope not only in this world, but also for all time and eternity.  Guide my thinking and my actions that I may be a faithful witness in the face of a world gone mad with sin.  May I be empowered to live this day humbly in the truth of Your Word.  Amen.

“Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, Though the number of the sons of Israel be like the sand of the sea, it is the remnant that will be saved” (Romans 9:27)

From every tribe, tongue, and nation they will come–all those who believe on the Lord Jesus and are saved.  The Lord will work this through His faithful disciples who obey and go to the ends of the earth proclaiming the unmerited forgiveness that has been purchased by Christ from the cross.  We each are called to join the cloud of witnesses who share the truth of the salvation made possible by Christ.

Lord, help me be a bold witness of Your salvation’s truth  with all of my life.  Guide me into truth, and help me to live by it.  May I become one who unapologetically proclaims with all of my life that I am Your disciple.  Help me not fear what this world would say or do, but instead boldly proclaim that You are the Way,  the Truth and the Life and that apart from You there is no salvation.

Thank You for including everyone in the offer of grace, Lord Jesus.  Through You, as many as come to You and believe have the promise of eternal life.  Help me live in that promise and share with others the gift You have given me.  May I be faithful this day, not only to Your promise, but also in willingly sharing the truth of Your gift with others whom I will meet this day.  Amen.
