“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.”  (Romans 8:9)

One must be born of water and the Spirit.  This is what Jesus says.  If you are not born of water and the Spirit, then you are not in Christ, and He is not in you.  Paul is saying the same thing here.  If that tug-of-war is not real, the Spirit is not there reminding you of the things of God.  Pray to the Holy Spirit that you might always be directed in the way of truth through this fallen world.

Lord, without You it is impossible.  Help me live in the realm of constant communion with You knowing that apart from You, it is not possible.  Help me live in this battle between sin that would pull me back and Your call to move forward that I may be one who runs to win the race.  Help me in Your Spirit that I may learn to listen and obey all that You command.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being there always.  Thank You, Holy Spirit, for being my counselor and guide.  Help me learn to listen to You always throughout the day that I may be aware of my constant need for Your help in every situation.  In all I do, may it clearly show others that You are present for Your sake and for the sake of the Gospel.  Amen.

“And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”  (Romans 8:8)

If you are self-absorbed, you cannot please anyone but yourself and in seeking to please only yourself, you please no one, including yourself.  We were created to interact with one another and ultimately with God.  Therefore, this is not a call to abandon that we are creatures of the flesh, but to live knowing that we are not just mere creatures and to live the higher calling.

Lord, I am tugged by the desires of the flesh to want to see them fulfilled, but often I see that they conflict with what I ought to be doing.  Help me understand this tug-of-war between my sinful self and the call of righteousness You have given my by faith.  Guide my spirit to not only recognize, but to be directed to do the things I ought to do and not just the things I feel like doing.

Lord Jesus, You are the example of how to live the godly life.  Help me today to live that life knowing that in Your example I can do all things because You strengthen me.  When I face temptation, help me move beyond that temptation and choose that which is right and fitting as Your disciple.  In all things, remind me that Your grace is more than sufficient.  Amen.

“Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so” (Romans 8:7)

The flesh will lead you in directions away from God, self-justifying and seeking self-satisfaction.  The mind of Christ leads You to the Father, away from the things of the flesh that pull You away from the Father.  This tug-of-war is the spiritual battle into which a disciple must enter in order to come onto the narrow path that leads to eternal life.  The struggle is not to obey the law, but to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit.

Lord, help me learn how to listen to You as You speak.  Guide my thoughts and actions that they may be in harmony with the will of the Father.  Give me strength through grace to resists temptation and make those choices which are befitting one who is Your disciple.  Help me in every circumstance to do the things that are according to the way of righteousness.

Lord Jesus, without You, it is impossible, but You have promised that with You all things are possible.  Help me to live today in Your way of peace and life that I may do those things that are in harmony with Your will.  Help me through every temptation to make right choices and do the things You would have me do in this day.  Through all that comes this day, keep me closely connected with You as You guide me through this day.  Amen.

“For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:6)

There is a dichotomy in our being that struggles between what is right and what we feel.  The world presses in around us and the desires of the flesh tug, wanting to be fulfilled.  Where we set out minds makes more of a difference than we might at first imagine.  This is why Scripture tells us to put on the mind of Christ, to set our minds on things above.  The Lord desires for us to have life and peace.

Lord, help me see more clearly the difference between a life dedicated to the things of the flesh and the things of the Spirit.  Help me understand that this difference is clearly the two paths, the broad road to destruction and the narrow road that leads to salvation.  Guide me along the right path that I would walk with You all the days of my life.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for clearing the path before all who are called into righteousness.  Guide me along Your path for Your namesake that I would walk the narrow road that You have placed before me.  Help me see that in You alone is there hope and a future for all eternity.  Guide me to put on Your mind and live into the life into which You are calling me that I would be approved in Your grace.  Amen.

“For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”  (Romans 8:5)

Where your heart is, you will find what you treasure.  If your mind is set on things of the flesh, you will live by things of the flesh.  If your mind is set on the things of God, you will live by the things of God.  Set your mind on hearing the Holy Spirit as the Spirit calls to you and gives you instruction that you may walk in the ways of the Lord.  To obey is better than sacrifice.

Lord, my spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.  Help me to understand just how weak the flesh is that I may live according to the Spirit, knowing that living in the flesh brings death.  Help me understand more each day and give me Your strength to walk in Your ways that I may learn holiness.  Guide me into Your way of truth this day and every day that I may grow to become like You.

I need Your help this day to flee from the temptations of the flesh and live into the truth of Your promise.  Help me each step of the way this day to listen as You speak and the obey as You direct.  Keep me in constant prayer that I would learn and live according to Your Word.  Thank You Lord for being my constant guide and stay throughout this day.  Amen.

“So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  (Romans 8:4)

We need help, which is why we need a Savior.  The law is accomplished through Christ, therefore in being united with Him, He is the accomplishment of the law that is needed to live eternally with the Father.  Therefore, we walk according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh, for we have been set free from bondage to the law and are now united with Christ.

Lord, You have said that unless I abide in You and You in me, I can do nothing.  Help me understand more fully that each and every day, I must abide in You.  Guide me in the Holy Spirit that I may listen as You speak and do the things You command.  Help me hear, listen, and obey as You direct me in my daily walk that I would learn the obedience that is necessary.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being patient with me.  Thank You for providing the ample grace that I need to walk each and every day.  Help me today to walk boldly in the truth You have revealed, sharing with others what You have shared with me.  May I be faithful in this calling You have given me, walking in Your ways all of this day You have given me.  Amen.

“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh” (Romans 8:3)

May you celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior in the freedom He gained because He has come!

The law has its power, but not to convince us that it is necessary.  Therefore, the law is weak.  At just the right time, God sent His Son to do what the law could not do.  In celebrating His birth, we celebrate the truth that because He came, He was able to accomplish what could not otherwise be done.  Through Christ, we have the gift of grace which overcomes the punishment the law demands.

Lord, I am dependent upon You and the fact that You showed up to accomplish freedom from the laws demands for payment.  Help me to remain dependent upon You and no longer live independent from You, giving my dependence to the law which will condemn me.  Guide me through grace to learn obedience in wisdom and not rely upon myself – a doomed proposition.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for coming and walking among us.  Thank You for taking upon Yourself the burden of us all and paying the price none of us could pay.  As we celebrate this day of festivities, may the truth of why You came be in and through all the celebration.  Lead me to celebrate that You are here and have given us the greatest gift of all through the salvation You came to accomplish.  Amen.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”  (Romans 8:2)

As the one propels you to death in sin, so the other propels you toward life and eternity.  Having been freed from death by sin, a new life is given in which the one so freed can live toward eternity without the constant fear of whether or not what is being done is good enough.  Through grace and with faith, all becomes a part of the upward journey through the call of Christ Jesus who leads His people by faith.

Lord, help me to listen to You, knowing that apart from You I cannot know the freedom You give by grace to enter into a life that learns to be in harmony with the Father’s will.  Guide me into the new life You have purchased for me by grace, so that I may learn how to do those things that are right and fitting for one who believes.  May I learn to listen to You as You guide me in my journey each and every day.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for freeing me from sin and death.  Help me to disdain the former life and learn how to live this new life You have given me.  Guide me today in Your way of righteousness, that I may choose each step of the way to do those things that are pleasing in the Father’s sight.  May I be faithful this day in the grace You give me to do what is right.  Amen.

Monday, December 23, 2013, Devotion

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”  (Romans 8:1)

Jesus Christ has overcome the power of sin by paying the price for sin.  All who are in Him are no longer under the power of condemnation that the law demands, but freed from the law’s recompense.  Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in the grace of Christ.  Being freed is not for licentiousness, but in order to live a life that brings glory to God.

Lord, help me to understand clearly that the freedom I have in You is not to go on without a care in this world, but in order to live responsibly into the righteousness that You grant in the Holy Spirit to live according to Your Word.  Help me, I pray, to live fully in the righteousness You give that I may live a life heading toward the promised eternity of a perfect life with You.

Without You Lord Jesus, none of this would be possible.  Help me realize that I am dependent upon You and the grace You give in order to not only live freely, but also with godly purpose and direction.  Guide me this day in Your righteousness that I would think and do those things that are befitting of a disciple, seeking to be obedient in all things to the upward call You have given me.  Amen.
