“Being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips.”  (Romans 1:29)

When one looks at what happens when one is handed over to depravity, you see the result. These are the so called ‘nice’ people that are all around us. Knowing this, those who believe need to be careful and realize this disease of sin is a serious business that needs constant tending by the Lord. Hold fast to the only faith that saves and cling by the power of the Holy Spirit that you may resist the day of evil.

Lord, I often do not give it a thought as I go through the day, sinning away. Help me realize that my salvation is a serious and ongoing business and that I need what You are offering. Help me, I pray, to live into this life into which You are calling me, that I may move away from the behavior of a depraved person and live a life of obedience to Your never failing Word.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for the salvation You give. Keep me away from becoming like those who have been handed over to depravity. When I encounter it, help me to pray for those who are depraved and remind me that except for Your grace, I too would be handed over to the depravity of this world. May I continue by Your grace to grow in that grace to be like You. Amen.

“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”  (Romans 1:28)

Those who reject any guidance from the Lord are left to their own devices.  The offer of salvation is given, but those who want to remain in their sin will be left in their sin.  This is the real recompense for those who violate the Lord’s direction: that they be left to their own devices and receive recompense according to their deeds.  Those who reject grace, will receive what the law naturally demands.

Lord, in many ways, I reject the boundaries You have imposed.  Help me understand that this is far more than doing, or not doing something, but that when I go into the territory of sin, I will pay a price for violating the inviolable laws You have established.  More than simply accepting grace, help me live according to the boundaries You have eternally established.

Thank You Lord for the abundant grace I need that You have provided.  Guide me today to trust in the boundaries You have put into place and live within the safe zone You establish.  When I err and wander, bring me quickly back into the place of safety and keep me from following after the sinners in the world who mock the truth You have revealed.  May my life be within Your will this day.  Amen.

And in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.  (Romans 1:27)

Every sin will bring recompense.  Doing things wrong always has a price.  If I misuse a tool, it will not function properly.  God is not capricious in His judgement, but consistent.  We live in an age where people want us to tell them that what they are doing is okay.  If God has not given permission, then neither can we.  We are to live according to God’s will, knowing that truthfully only be grace are we able to even begin to become obedient to the will of the Father.

Lord, it’s a crazy world out there.  People tell me right is wrong and then get mad if I speak Your word which tells them otherwise.  Help me to simply be firm in my commitment to Your will and Your way and then, no matter what may come, to simply stand firm in the truth You have revealed.  Help me to grow in faithfulness and stand in Your Word.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, even for these words which are difficult in our day.  The spiritual battle raging around us is pretty clear.  Guide me today and every day to simply hold fast to the truth You have given and not to let the wicked one snatch away the truth that I already know.  Guide me into being faithful in every situation, knowing You have already given us the words of eternal life.  Amen.

“For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural.”  (Romans 1:26)

As a Christian, understand that the word natural simply means what God has ordained.  The natural order of things is the doing of God’s will.  Anything apart from this is unnatural.  Our culture is filled with unnatural behavior.  The devil wants us to exchange God’s order with any other order and continue the rebellion against God.  Grace calls for us to stop the battle and seek the Lord’s ways in all things.

Lord, help me see that I too continue the rebellion by looking for excuses for my own unnatural behavior.  Help me see the truth that anything apart from Your will is unacceptable.  Help me also to neither be hostile towards others in their unnatural behavior, nor be anything but firm in standing up for what is right against a world that listens to the devil and ignores you.

Lord, help me put You on in my life that I would live according to Your will.  Grant that I would be gracious to others, but also firm in my commitment to what You have already declared as the order of things.  Help me be a witness of Your natural law this day, saying and doing what is right in Your eyes and all for Your glory.  Amen.

“For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”  (Romans 1:25)

Herein lies the human problem: we worship ourselves.  Regardless the attitude we may actually have, we think of ourselves first.  The Lord is Lord and Creator of all.  The creature is to worship the Creator, but we exchange the truth for a lie.  Turning back, repenting is turning from this desire to worship ourselves first and placing things in their proper order.  Turn to the truth.

Lord, I want to deny that I do this, saying that I am not like the others, but I am.  I think most often of myself first.  Help me, I pray to see this simple truth that Your Word declares that by Your power, I may lifted up from this depravity and have the right priorities.  Guide me away from a self-centered view of life to see things as they really are that I may live in the truth You have revealed through Your saving Gospel.

Guide me today, Lord. away from selfish and self-centered thinking into a way of thinking that is right and fitting as one of Your created beings.  Keep me on the straight and narrow path that leads to You, that I may live my life this day as it ought to be lived.  Help me in every moment that I may be aware of the life You offer in contrast to the life I would choose as a sinner.  Amen.

“Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.”  (Romans 1:24)

As Jeremiah 17 say, the heart is deceitful above all things.  The Lord will hand us over to our hearts if we do not look to Him.  It is already there and what we need is the rescue that only His salvation can bring.  What is surprising is the goodness that is in our world because of God’s mercy.  We ought not be surprised at the evil that exists because of sin.

Lord, I often get it backwards, thinking that evil should not exist because I am basically a good person.  Help me see that without Your intervention, there would be no hope at all, for all have sinned.  Keep me from lusts of impurity, that I would not go the way of the wicked heart, but instead, lift me out of the pit of sin that I would go with You all the days of my life.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for coming and rescuing those who will turn to You.  Guide me this day in Your ways of righteousness that I would not be handed over to the lusts that are in my heart.  Create in me a clean heart O God and renew in me a right spirit that I would walk in Your ways this day, doing that which is pleasing in Your sight.  Amen.

“Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.”  (Romans 1:22, 23)

Isn’t it amazing how people can get so caught up in foolish speculation.  You and I often do get caught up in these things.  God is the Creator of all things.  We are to worship the Creator and not any creature, or thing that is made.  Sure, modern man will say he does not do this, but he does.  Be on your guard to not be caught up in the foolishness that is present in every generation.

Lord, help me to see clearly the truth.  Help me to not get carried away by speculative thinking.  Keep me grounded in Your Word of truth which You have already given that I may stay the course and live into the life into which You are calling me.  Help me to see through all of the foolish offerings that the world presents that I may hold fast to the faith once and for all delivered through the Apostles.

Guide me to today, Lord Jesus, into right thinking and acting.  Lead me into Your Word that I may spend time on the truth and not on the speculations of sinful humanity.  Help me to learn and grow in understanding that I may not be tossed about by the false doctrines that are all about and help me to stand fast in the truth of Your already revealed grace.  Amen.

Thursday, July 25, 2013, Devotion

“For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”  (Romans 1:21)+

Speculative thinking is all the rage.  It’s almost as if a more outrageous idea is better than what God has revealed.  Scripture has spoken and we do well to simply listen.  The alternative is foolishness.  Listen to what the Lord says and take in the report He has given.  From Scripture we hear the story of His salvation and not from our speculations.  Know the Gospel and know the hope God gives.

Lord, I too get caught up in the endless speculation, spurned on by devilishness that does nothing but confuse.  Help me to sort through my own thinking in order to be clear on the true message You have given me through the Gospel.  May I be faithful to what You say and leave all of the speculation behind.  Guide my mind to live in the truth You have already given.

Thank You, Jesus, for clearly and specifically showing the way to eternal life – through You.  Help me today to not get caught up in any speculative thinking, but instead, focus on the simple truth that You have come into the world to lead those who would follow You into eternal life.  May I be faithful today to the true Gospel that has already been revealed.  Amen.

Wednesday, July 24, 2013, Devotion

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”  (Romans 1:20)

Modern science is based upon searching the attributes of that which is made.  Seeking rules, we encounter order, design, an intentionality, but we can, sinfully ignore the obvious reality that is present.  It is in the ignoring that we place ourselves without excuse.  But you who see, delve deeper into the revelation of the God who has revealed Himself in so many ways that You might not be ignorant, but knowing and believing.

Lord, help me dive further into the revelation You have given me, through Your Word and in the Word made flesh.  Help me to understand more clearly that You have come into the world to bring out as many as would turn to You and know that You are the One through whom all things have their being.  Lord help me to no longer look for excuses, but instead, see the answer clearly.

Thank You, Lord, for writing Your presence into creation itself.  Help me to have eyes that see.  Help me to express what I see clearly for others to hear, that they too might see and no longer remain blind to what is right before them.  May I be Your visible instrument in the world, declaring for others to hear, the truth of Your presence and purpose in this world.  Amen.
